Winnie's first lesson

Well today we went down to Fremont to see Denise for Winnie's first competition obedience lesson.

I carried her around the park for about 10 minutes so that she could check things out. There was a woman there doing Tai-Chi which was very cool.

I put the pup back into her Sherpa in the car and was going to get Dolce out to "play" at retrieving before Winnie's lesson. Dolce was nearly hysterical when I got back to the car and had started shrieking when I was about 15' away.

I zipped up the pup and pulled out the pissed off old dog. We walked over between the basketball court and the baseball diamond. I set him up, told him to stay and threw the dumbell. He took off just as the dumbell left my hand. I tried to call him off but he ignored me. When he grabbed the dumbell and turned around I could see that he was CHOMPING on his dumbell. He got back to me and would not out the dumbell. He was chewing/chomping on it so hard I thought that he was going to bite through it. He dropped it after about 30 seconds. I tried again and he blew his stay and away wouldn't out. I picked him up which stopped his aggressive chomping on his poor tiny wooden dumbell. Our "training" session went on like that for a bit. Eventually I gave up and we just played fetch with his dumbell. I need to replace the poor dainty thing now.

The dumbell before his lesson today:

The dumbell after a frustrated poodle got his jaws on it....

After Dolce had relieved some tension I put him back into the car and walked around without any poodles for a bit.

Then it was Winnie's turn.

We worked on the basketball court for 15 minutes. Denise played tug with her first with the Robit and then with a plain leather tug. The pup did better with the plain leather. Winnie started off a tad bit subdued but settled in and played nicely. In addition to tug work we also worked on position changes.
  • tuck sit from stand
  • tuck into a sit from a down
  • fold back down from a stand
  • find heel
Denise is full of great ideas/suggestions/experience. I was told that I shoudl try giving the pup ground egg shell, chicken necks and salmon oil (or else she will grow up dumb! - NO PRESSURE there!)
